Costa Souk Madinat Jumeirah

A refresh of Costa Coffee’s branding called for a refresh of their spaces, the first being unveiled at Souk Madinat Jumeirah as H2R Design took on the challenge of elevating the design of a much-loved coffee brand.

With a brief to stay true to the brand identity, whilst also having the freedom to be inspired by the environment surrounding the branch, H2R used the heritage of the souk to subtly weave in the heritage of the location, juxtaposing the old and the new.

Using the terracotta tones of the souk as a guide while also gently incorporating the new pink colour as part of Costa Coffee’s brand guidelines, the application of grainy textured paint reflects the heritage of the location, while handcrafted subway-style tiles and the use of steel bring an industrial element to the outlet. The iconic Costa Coffee red keeps the identity of the instantly recognisable brand and brings further pops of colour, while the art graphics used on the walls tell the story of the brand.

Youthful, modern, clean, welcoming, and familiar, the use of oak ensures the cafe is as warm as the products they are serving, while the terrazzo tiles of the serving counter continue to add to the texture.

Recognising that the café welcomes a wide variety of guests, from families who are enjoying a vacation, to remote workers who use the space as a base, the clever use of zoning ensured that there are seating options for both groups or solo guests, with a communal table being a standout feature.
